A short trip to Rosslyn Bay Marina on 1/7 of about 1 and ½ hours left us in the lap of luxury for about twelve days, i.e. power, water, showers and all the facilities of Yeppoon and Rockhampton. Met some interesting people as usual and made friends with Bill and Sue from the yacht Dreamtime, who we hope to catch up with in the Whitsundays. Teresa went to Brisbane for a few days and drove our car back so we could take it further north with us and she would easily be able to visit her son Ryan, who now lives at Tully Heads.
We must say that the Keppel Bay marina was one of, if not the best Marina we have visited so far. The staff and facilities were second to none.
Leaving Rosslyn Bay on the 12th of July we had a one night stopover at Port Clinton and then the following day cruised through Pearl Bay and stopped over night at Island Head Creek. All three places worth seeing for their own particular delights.
On the 14th off to the famous “Percy Isles”. Middle Percy was a magical place and here we got to try out our new inflatable canoe, which Teresa had bought whilst in Brisbane. Unfortunately, as has so often being the case, our visit was cut short by the ever present rolling anchorages, which did nothing to appease Teresa’s ever present sea sickness. At 5am the next day every boat (8) left for this reason and so for us off to Scawfell Is. for a stopover on our way to the “Whitsundays”. Again, a very uncomfortable anchorage which saw us under way the next day at 4am for Brampton Island. From there, on the same day we decided to continue to Airlie Beach and anchored off the Whitsunday Yacht Club at about 4pm. Airlie Beach is certainly going ahead, if that’s the word, with more and more real estate being developed on what seems like a forever basis. The Yacht Club is a very good scene for boaties, with all the amenities including a pontoon for dozens of dinghys. We spent Sunday collecting our car from Rosslyn Bay and Monday morning refilling a gas bottle and getting washing up to date and strolling through Airlie Beach Township. After washing down the boat and filling with water in the afternoon we headed off to start and see some of the sights on the good ship Ariel. Fifteen minutes after leaving Airlie we came across our first whales! What a sight, three beautiful animals heading north on their annual sojourn to breed.
Spent our first true night in the Whitsundays at Woodwark Bay and both had a very restful night. This morning we are contemplating the next few days as the winds are predicted to increase towards the end of the week. Teresa’s daughter April and her new partner are coming to visit for a few days next week so we are looking forward to that and must find some good spots to show them before they arrive. Also had a very pleasant dinner on board Warren and Laureens’s boat the other night. Will keep you posted
