Now that the cruise has finished and the skipper has done his last entry, I guess it’s time for me to write something. The trip for me was not the greatest. I didn’t enjoy the bad weather and I must admit I’m not very tolerant of bad weather. I prefer being outside to inside, sun not rain and despise wind, especially if it is more than 15knots.
Now some of the trip was great, but mostly the people we met along the way. Really, the Queensland coastline is the same except for a couple of places like Whitehaven beach and Great Kepple Island. You could be in Moreton Bay and have the same outlook, so “why travel all that way”?
I’m sure some of the boating people out there do it because it’s the thing to do “OH! Let’s cruise the Queensland coast “and that is fine because most of them are retired or don’t work and have nothing to do anyway. We were away 5 months in total and that was long enough for me. I am glad to be back.
The boat preformed very well and we were extremely pleased with it, very comfortable when we were in good weather and good anchorages. The accessories we put on the boat before we left all worked out perfectly except for maybe the little washing machine I bought. It was really too small and just washed and didn’t spin the clothes, which meant you had to wring by hand which wouldn’t be too bad except that my hands are so weak. I would definitely purchase a better washing system before cruising again and you really must think of a dryer, weather does not always allow for line drying.
The food supplies, well that was an overkill. I will have tinned food for the next year – there is no need to stock up that much as you are never too far away from supplies and all it does really is weigh down the boat. I was really happy with the refrigeration and didn’t have to throw anything out at all. The freezer worked most efficiently and I was even able to have ice cream the entire trip. Now I know that is a bit of a luxury but I don’t drink or smoke so I’m allowed something.
One of the things in life I really do enjoy is a long hot shower. Having done a similar trip years ago I knew that I would have to cut down the showers to minimise water usage, which I was happy to do expecting the temperature to be warmer so one would be swimming and so only needing a quick rinse of fresh water. But the gods were not kind and most of the trip was spent wearing a jumper so not only did that make more washing but quick showers weren’t exciting me. Normally I’m happy to be out on anchor but this trip it was really nice to be in the marinas with access to limitless hot water. That wasn’t the only reason we went into the marinas, but it certainly was one of the perks.
John asked me when we arrive back if I would do it again and my first response was NO, I would be happy to go to a couple of places again i.e. Lady Musgrave Island and some of the reefs we heard so much about but couldn’t get to because of the bad weather. I don’t know how or why some people cruise every year to the Whitsundays they must see something that is invisible to me.
To sum up, “been there done that”.
